Great job! Well worth picking up. I purchased for my 8 yr old son and he has not stopped playing it. Great graphics (remember this is a DS not a PS3), sound is better then what one of the review sites suggested, nothing fantastic, but good enough. Well thought out game attributes such as the base overlay. Being a veteran baseball video game junkie, I gave it a whirl, and found a challenge to be had at the hard level. I still would like to see a port of the old triple play for the Genesis, or even Baseball Stars would be great too. But for now this is the only baseball game in town and worthy of a purchase.

Fastpitch Softball - Shortstop Positioning

When there is a runner on 1st base, move your shortstop about 5 feet towards 2B. More if need be. Depending on your age group, the odds are probably between 50% up to 95% that there will be a play at 2B. On the other hand, the odds of the ball being hit to SS are much lower. You might even get lucky and have a ball hit up the middle which the SS can field and tag 2B or even turn a double play.

Make a mental note to yourself, after each batter look at your shortstops positioning. This is a chess game. Think about what you expect your opponent to do in this given situation, and position your shortstop appropriately.

Runner on 1st Base

In 10U & 12U it's almost a given the runner is going to steal. In 14U and up, the odds are still pretty strong that at some point the runner will try to advance, either on a straight steal or on a bobbled pitch. We KNOW this is going to happen a very high percentage of the time.

Situational positioning of the Shortstop may be the most common coaching oversight in Fastpitch Softball. My guess would be 95% of the teams put the shortstop in the middle of 2nd and 3rd and never move her. Okay, that's great with no runners on base, but what about all the other situations.

So why is your shortstop still in the hole? How many times have you seen the shortstop have to cut the corner to get to the throw in time, and therefore be two or three feet in front of 2B and unable to make a tag? Aaaaggghhh!!! I hate that! And there is no reason for it to happen.

By placing her in the optimal position before the pitch is thrown, you also avoid her breaking to the bag while the pitch is on the way. Huh? I'm sure you have seen shortstops break to the base as soon as the pitch is thrown, and then have a ball hit right where she should have been standing. Since she is breaking on the pitch, her momentum increases the size of the hole immensely. Whereas, if she is positioned correctly before the pitch, she can hold her position longer before making her break to cover the steal.

Lead Runner on 2nd Base

If you use SS to cover 3B on steals, the same philosophy applies. Move her about 5 feet from the hole towards 3B. It's a very tough play for SS to cover 3B on steals. She has to get their, find the base, catch the ball, and make a tag. How many throws to 3B have you seen wind up in the outfield because the runner and SS got tangled up at 3B? Too many. Take the precision timing out of the play by getting her in a better position before the play starts.

Here is the game: get 6 players on ea side defense is pitcher, catcher, 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, and shortstop. Offense is 6 base runners, put them behind home plate and tell everyone you are going to hit ground balls at the defense and their objective is to get the runner out at 1st. Award a point when they get the runner out. After the play is over have the runner come back to home and get back in line.

Getting young players to keep their attention span at a high level is always a challenge for the youth baseball coach.

My Suggestion is to incorporate a games type scenario into your practices.

1st run some ground ball drills maybe cross field throws and after a while stop the practice and tell the players you are going to make it a friendly competition!!

Continue on with this drill go thru the defense 2-3 times and then switch sides.

This is easily the best depiction of major league baseball that I've encountered in a video game. The game does an excellent job of capturing the tension between batter and pitcher confrontations and allows the player to customize a lot of the gameplay. While HHB2003 does have its problems, it is overall a very solid game. Gameplay: More than anything, the gameplay mechanics are just right. Everything from batting and pitching to fielding and base-running all just seem perfectly done and intuitive. The larger strategy game of putting together a team, managing AAA players, arranging schedules, and so forth is also well done and allows a lot of customization of gameplay. You can get deeply involved in trading, statistics, and standings, or ignore them altogehter. There are several modes that you can play, including exhibition, homerun derby, playoffs, or an entire 162-game season! There is also a career mode. The computer-controlled teams play intelligently and never seem to cheat (at least not on the pro or all-star difficulty levels). However, teams that you have been beating all season do get noticeably bettter in the postseason. The game is very immersive and intense, and you do get a great sense that you are in the midst of a real baseball game. There are a few things that slightly ruin the atmosphere (see below), but overall the game almost perfectly imitates the big leagues. Visuals: This is a mixed bag. Player animations are pretty good, but the stadiums are completely static. The fans are literally colored blots on a flat surface. There is no movement in the dugout. The fields look okay, but the stadiums overall appear nondynamic. This is where the game fails to maintain the immersive atmosphere. It's not fatal to the experience, but, noticeable. On the positive side, the game does instant replays and the highlights of the game are saved for viewing once a game ends. Sounds: Generally great. The announcers are fantastic, and there is commentary for nearly every possible situation. I've been playing the game for weeks, and I'm still occasionally hearing new quotes. The crowd cheers and boos at appropriate times, and the rock music that plays when various menu screens are opened is fine. The audio for this game would be perfect except for occasional studders. It doesn't happen a lot, but when it does it's awfully annoying, since the audio is generally excellent. It's too bad that the developer did not patch this, assuming that it could be easily fixed. Technical/Replayability: This game has been perfectly stable on my computer. The instruction manual that comes with the game is good. Of course, there is a lot of replay value, since every game is different and there are 30 different teams and several gameplay modes. You can even create new teams and players. If you are a baseball fan, this game is definitely worth picking up. Rating: 4.25/5 stars

Everything Sucks in this game. It's to easy to hit a home run. And Hey 3DO went bankrupt. I wonder why. Because it Sucks. In fact, the night before the draft I actually go to bed dreaming about what tomorrow will bring. Will I take Arod with the first pick? Will Albert Pujols slide to me at pick 7? So without further ado, let's get started. Today I'll cover the first topic under the draft prep category, League Rules. It's not sexy, it's not flashy, but it deserves your attention because it will influence how you go about drafting your team.

League Rules
Whenever you play a game or enter a contest there's going to be a set of rules that everyone must follow and fantasy baseball is no exception. All of these rules are equally important and will dictate how you and your opponents approach the game. While not every rule is going to need your undivided attention, there are several rules that need to be accounted for, which will contribute to your drafting strategy. One of these rules is the requirement of how many active pitchers you will have.

One of the first rules that you should look at is the active lineup requirement in regards to pitchers. There are typically 2 formats for pitching depending on the league that you're in. You'll either start a total of 7 pitchers or a total of 9 pitchers. The first thing you'll want to determine is how many of the 7 or 9 active pitchers should be starting pitchers and how many should be closers? Well, in a 5x5 or 4x4 league that requires 7 pitchers in your lineup, you should have 5 starting pitchers and 2 closers. In a 5x5 or 4x4 league that requires 9 pitchers in your lineup, you should have 6 starting pitchers and 3 closers. This will give you the optimum chance out of the gate to compete in every category (I can't stress enough the importance of keeping pace in every category). Now that you know how many starting pitchers and how many closers you will have in your active lineup, you will be more prepared for your draft. But it doesn't end there. In addition to looking at how many starting pitchers and closers you'll have in your active lineup, you'll need to look at whether there are any rules regarding minimum or maximum innings pitched.

While most of the rules are meant to be a restriction of sorts, there can sometimes be rules that actually provide you with an advantage. The innings pitched rule with possible maximums and minimums will dictate this. The minimum innings pitched usually won't be of any concern with the strategy we discussed above (using a combo of 5 starters and 2 closers or 6 starters and 3 closers). However, if there's no maximum on innings pitched, you can use this greatly to your advantage.

Whenever there's no maximum for innings pitched, I like to stream at least one pitcher each week. What is streaming? Streaming is when you pick up a free agent to play in your active lineup based upon how good of a match-up they have that week and whether or not they'll be making two starts. For instance, I'd rather pick-up a Micah Owings who will have a two-start week against a horrible Washington Nationals and San Francisco Giants offense than have John Garland vs. the Yankees in one start. The reasoning is this. Garland will most likely not get the win and probably end-up with stats like 5 IP, 4 ER, 2 K and 0 W. While Owings through his two starts in the same week could easily end-up with 12 IP, 5 ER, 10 K and 1 W. Seems like a no brainer right? Well that's because it is.

Now, if you're going to be streaming than you'll need to adjust the draft strategy we spoke about above. Instead of making sure that you take 5 starters and 2 closers or 6 starters and 3 closers for your active lineup, you only need 4 starters or 5 starters because you will be using the last slot for streaming. Streaming will certainly get you more wins and K's and shouldn't hurt your ERA and WHIP. So make sure that you don't waste a pick on a sixth starter in the middle rounds on draft day by taking a John Garland when you could be snagging one of your hot sleepers instead.

I could have written the other review myself. I have 2 boys, now ages 9 and 4, but we have had the "sports guys" for years; the hockey guys are the newest additions to our collection. We also have soccer, football, and baseball, and all have been played with basically all the time. We always take a set on vacation with us as well, in case of "rainy indoor days." I cannot speak highly enough of these toys, and often recommend them, especially to other moms of sports-obsessed boys.

The Houston Astros made an incredible run to finish the 2005 regular season, stealing the Wild Card and defeating conference rival St. Louis in the playoffs on their way to the World Series. Having to win to make the playoffs got the Astros playing great baseball and gave them good momentum heading into the postseason. We saw this same effect with the Steelers this past NFL season when they had to win do or die games for over a month to make the playoffs. While other teams were coasting, such as St. Louis, Houston was playing to win.

Many analysts were saying that the Astros ran out of gas in the World Series. Realistically, they ran out of bats. They struggled to support their elite pitching staff all season long, and I dont see big changes on the offensive end on the horizon. It really hurt this team to lose Beltran and Berkmans numbers suffered slightly because of it as his 2005 stats were below his career averages. They dont have a strong lineup and rely heavily on their pitching staff to pick up wins. Outside of Berkman, Morgan Ensberg is the only guy with any punch, after hitting .283 last season with 36 home runs and 101 RBIs.

The Astros have started slow the past several seasons and have caught fire down the stretch. They have especially struggled early on versus left handed pitching as they started last season winning just 4 of their first 18 against south paws and just 1 of their first 12 on the road versus lefties. It would be wise to take a look at this team in the early going to see if a similar trend develops. The pitching staff has really carried this squad the last two seasons and last year they held opponents to only a .246 opposing batting average, which was the best in the major leagues. Roy Oswalt, Andy Pettitte, and Brandon Backe form a decent top three, but they will be anxiously awaiting to see if Roger Clemens is going to make his way back into an Astros uniform. The bullpen has developed great talent over the years, with Dotel, Wagner, and now Brad Lidge. Lidge struggled in the playoffs but Im expecting him to recover and have an impressive season after picking up 42 saves last season.

The Astros have become a fan favorite and one of those teams that people really enjoy betting on. A lot of that comes from them playing in the same division as the Cardinals and Cubs and getting a lot of quality games against ace pitchers. With that being said, you can really benefit by opening up multiple sportsbook accounts so you can keep track of where the public money is going and hit up advantageous lines. Customer Review: Not for use with vaulted ceilings
It's a cute fan, but hard to install on vaulted ceilings since the rod on the hanger ball is not very long. Usually you can buy an extender, but the connection on this rod is different than any extender we can find. The two stars should be taken with consideration that we never saw it work.
